Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on NATO Thursday to strengthen its military presence in the region, and requested US support during the alliance’s summit in June, in Kiev’s bid to join the alliance’s membership action plan.
Zelensky said in a statement after his meeting with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken: “We request the assistance of the United States in starting this process.”
For his part, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuliba said after a meeting from Blinken that Washington assured Ukraine today that its interests will be taken into account in a meeting between the American and Russian presidents.
“I am completely confident that the meeting between (Joe) Biden and (Vladimir) Putin, if it takes place, will be in the interest of Ukraine,” Kuliba added to the Interfax Ukraine news agency.
“In addition, we have already obtained assurances from our American partners that they will not decide anything about Ukraine without taking our interests into consideration,” he added.
