Williamsburg, long known for its immersive, award-winning experiences of the colonial era, is known for more than just tri-century hats. It was actually like this for a long time, but curious visitors finally internalized what was largely known only to locals. At the heart of this experience for me personally will always be a luxury retreat Kingsmill Resort. Why is it so amazing? For these reasons and many more.
Located in the Tidewater region of Virginia in the southeastern part of the state, Williamsburg’s popularity over the years has been greatly enhanced by its convenient location. Williamsburg is less than three hours from Washington, DC and a 45-minute drive from Richmond. Also nearby are historic Jamestown and Yorktown, and down the road is Virginia Beach. So whether you’re traveling from these locations or want to add them to your vacation plans, Williamsburg is a great home base.
Sitting on a portion of land that was once Kingsmill Ranch from the colonial era, this luxury retreat we know today emerged in the 1970s as part of a series of massive investments by Anheuser-Busch in Williamsburg. Not only have these developments included the mixed-use sites and destination of Kingsmill Resort, but also the Busch Gardens amusement park located right next door.
Among the many superlatives, Kingsmill has long been known as a great golf destination, which they take very seriously. The three property courses were designed by Curtis Strange, Arnold Palmer and Pete Day – clear myths about golf and course design. Although the courses are of really professional quality, they are also very friendly and very enjoyable for any level of golf player. Kingsmill may excel at golf and golf courses, but that’s definitely not the only reason you love the resort.
Among the many resort amenities that Kingsmill has to offer are indoor / outdoor swimming pools, a lazy river pool, tennis and pickle ball, and a full-service marina; Just some of the many ways guests enjoy when they call the Kingsmill house. Kingsmill Spa is one of the most popular, and a personal favorite. Looking out over the beautiful James River, my tension seemed to dissipate instantly with a sense of calm and serenity enveloping me. The public areas are great and the treatment rooms are not only state-of-the-art, but they are also incredibly comfortable. I think the spa is a great way to thank your muscles after an enjoyable week of outdoor explorations.
There are a few locations in the country that are well suited for different types of travelers such as Williamsburg. The most obvious are the family travelers, who visit children of any age as Colonial Williamsburg will bring history to life. Painstakingly restored, Williamsburg is the best place in the country to immerse yourself in colonial-era life. Nothing quite like the experience and strolling down the main road of the area is something I will never tire of. Another fun way to experience Colonial Williamsburg is to enjoy a meal in one of the colonial bars or restaurants. A typical Williamsburg colonial restaurant, Josiah Chowning’s Tavern offers a great atmosphere and retro food. At night, Chowning’s always hosts fun, and sometimes bawdy gambols. Gambols are 18th century games and songs that were popular in bars of the time. Patrons are encouraged to participate, and soon you will find yourself singing along with the rest of the house in loud songs and musical poems. It is very interesting and definitely not to be missed.
Aside from the colonial side of things, Busch Gardens is one of my favorite theme parks, offering great tours, old-fashioned food and fun only. If you are a foodie, there is no shortage of great restaurants in the city as well as the Williamsburg Winery and the many breweries offering some delicious drinks.
When I really enjoy a hotel or resort, it’s sometimes hard to pinpoint exactly why. I can definitely cite rooms or amenities as grounds, and they are, but they are also so much more than that. Great vacation vacations have a certain indefinable quality that I cannot fully explain, but I know when I feel. Kingsmill It has this travel charm and it is a place that I find not only enjoyable but also relaxing and even therapeutic. So, if you are looking for a safe and driveable getaway this summer, look no further than this truly amazing resort.
