On Sunday, Pope Francis called for an end to the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis, saying that it is unacceptable that so many innocent lives have been lost over the past few days, including children, warning of widespread hatred, revenge, and the destruction of the path of peace.
In a weekly sermon in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said, “I call for calm, and for those responsible to stop the noise of weapons and follow the path of peace with the help of the international community.” He added, “Many innocent people have died, and there are children among them too. This is horrific … unacceptable. Their death is a sign that people do not want to build a future, but rather destroy it .. I wonder where the hatred and revenge will lead?
“These days, violent armed clashes dominate the Gaza Strip and Israel (of the scene), and carry the risk of turning into a spiral of death and destruction,” the Pope said, following a prayer.
The Pope’s remarks, which he addressed to a crowd in Saint Peter’s Square in the Vatican, came after he held a special mass in Myanmar on Sunday morning in which he called for an end to violence.
