UN Secretary-General says hostilities in Gaza and Israel ‘extremely horrific’

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the UN Security Council on Sunday that hostilities in Israel and Gaza were “extremely horrific” and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

He said the United Nations is “actively working to engage all parties for an immediate ceasefire,” and called on them to “allow the mediation efforts to intensify and succeed.”

The fighting must stop. Guterres said at the opening of a Security Council session that the United States, an ally of Israel, postponed immediately, describing the violence that has killed nearly 200 people over the past week as “extremely horrific”.

He said, “It is likely that this will unleash a humanitarian and security crisis that cannot be contained and further strengthen extremism, not only in the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel, but in the region as a whole.”
