A California woman lost a $ 26 million lottery prize after she forgot the ticket in her laundered clothes, as reported by ABC News.
The newspaper added that the woman had bought the card from a store in the Noor Walk suburb of Los Angeles on November 14, but it expired last Thursday after the woman failed to confirm her purchase of the card.
A store employee, Esperanza Hernandez, told the Wetter Daily News, as reported by ABC News, that a woman came on Wednesday and told workers that she had put the ticket in her clothes and it was destroyed in the laundry.
The store manager said a copy of the surveillance video had been handed over to California lottery officials.
California lottery officials declined to confirm or deny that there was evidence in the video confirming the identity of the winner who bought the ticket.
Lottery officials say the person they think is a winner must fill out the claim form. But if someone loses a ticket, they must provide evidence that they own it, such as a photo of the front and back of the ticket, officials said.
But regardless, the surveillance video will not be enough to verify the purchase of the winning Super Lottery ticket, they said.
The winning numbers were: 23, 36, 12, 31, 13, and the huge number 10. The $ 26 million prize could be taken in annual installments or as a cash option of $ 19.7 million.
It is noteworthy that if the award is not claimed, the amount of 19.7 million dollars will go to public schools in California.
The shop that sold the ticket will receive a reward of $ 130,000.
It is reported that 4 prizes worth $ 20 million or more have not been claimed since 1997, including a prize of $ 63 million sold in 2015.
