The British Ministry of Health announced that the United Kingdom, on Friday, licensed the Covid-19 vaccine produced by the American company Johnson & Johnson, which is given in a single dose, adding a fourth vaccine to its arsenal to combat the pandemic.
Health Minister Matt Hancock said that the vaccine license “represents a new push forward for the UK’s massively successful vaccination program, which has so far saved more than 13,000 lives, and means that we now have four safe and effective vaccines that have been licensed to protect people from this horrific virus.” .
He added that the government hopes that “(Johnson & Johnson vaccine) will play an important role in the coming months,” at a time when young people are getting more vaccinated due to concern about the increase in cases of the Indian mutant.
Britain has requested 20 million doses of the vaccine.
In April, the European Medicines Agency stated that a warning about the possibility of the Johnson vaccine causing unusual blood clots and low platelet count should be added to the information associated with it after cases of this type were recorded in the United States.
A test in the United States showed the vaccine to be 72 percent effective in preventing moderate to severe cases of coronavirus.
Britain has given more than 62 million doses of vaccines so far, mainly using Pfizer and AstraZeneca. It also licensed Moderna vaccine.
After months of declining infections, they rose again due to the emergence of the Indian mutant, which raised questions about the possibility of moving forward with plans to completely lift the restrictions to contain the virus on June 21.
