Matt Busette writes that Nonito Donner and Norden Opali will engage in a great story
Wonderful Nonito Donner Offers to take the WBC Pantamil Bantamweight title from fellow Veteran Noureddine Obali At Dignity Heath Sports Park in Carson, California, Saturday night (May 28). It is broadcast in the US by Showtime.
Four-wheel belt weight holder Donner is now 38 years old, and the French champion is 34 years old. And they were about 18 months younger when the battle was first brought up. Donner became Opali’s mandatory contender in December 2019. The battle was ultimately decided last December, but Opali was disqualified after testing positive for the coronavirus. WBC made Oubaali a “Champion in Recess” and paired Donaire with Puerto Rico’s Emanuel Rodriguez. The battle was only nine days away when Donner was announced infected with the Coronavirus. Filipino puncher Remart Gaballo stepped up to overtake Rodriguez for the interim WBC title and earlier this year WBC reinstated the full champion Oubaali.
Oubaali (0-17) and Donaire (40-6) last fought at the same show, in Japan in November 2019. Donaire lost this year’s unanimous battle to the Japanese idol. Naoya Inoue In the final World Boxing Super Series Oubaali was to win points over Takuma Inoue, Naoya’s younger brother.
The French south defeated Eno in fourth place and went on to win with scores of 115-112, 117-110 and 120-107.
Upali was an outstanding amateur, competing in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, before turning at the age of 27 and at the age of 32 when he won the vacant WBC title in Las Vegas by beating Rushy Warren in January 2019, repeating his victory. Registered for the 2012 London Olympics.
Upali built his defenses against Filipino veteran Arthur Villanueva (32-3-1) in Kazakhstan and Inoue in Japan. The win over Inoue was his 17th in a row as a professional, while Donner fought 20 fights for the “World” title, winning 16.
Oubaali was still an amateur the first time Donner had won world titles at 118 pounds, and his hit with the left hook sent Mexican Fernando Montiel en route to defeat in two rounds in February 2011. There were persistent rumors that Donner would not be able to back down. To 118 pounds for the World Boxing Super Series when it was announced in the lineup three years ago.
Not only had he been weighing in for seven years, but Donner not only gained 118 lbs, but also shocked Belfast WPA champion Ryan Burnett (19-0). Donner was able to compete before Burnett’s back injury forced his retirement, then the “Philippine Flash” turned the clock back to flatten the St. Louis Southpaw Stephon Young, a late substitute for injured Zulani Tete, with a left hook to reach the final.
There he met Inoue and in a high-quality battle of many twists and turns, the latest development came at 11 when Donner was dropped for only the third time in his career with a physical shot that placed a gap between them on the scorecards.
In Oubaali, Donaire faces a crowded southern paw with a quick fist, feet, and massive ejection of punches. Of Moroccan descent, Opali, the thirteenth of 18 children growing up in the suburbs of Paris, had a long career with amateurs that included a bronze world championship in 2007.
He was beaten by Chinese Xu Shiming as he beat Opali in the countdown in the Round of 16 in the 2008 Olympics.
Four years later, Michael Konlan of Ireland was deprived of the Opali Medal with a 22-18 win. Opali hasn’t lost since becoming a pro in 2014, but Aino made him look rough in the last minute. The hit that dealt damage was a left hook, a shot that worked for Inoue throughout and brought Donaire some great knockouts. Opali was still an apparent scorecard winner and he deserved it.
The fight started by hitting Ino with a punch from the outside, then he began to advance behind his shots.
Upali scored a knockout late in the fourth game and kept punches coming in duels and hat-tricks until the last bell.
Opali’s height is 5 feet 4 inches, he’s 3 inches shorter than Donner and he will know that a single mistake when he gets in or out could end his reign. The Frenchman definitely wouldn’t be able to get rid of Donner’s left hook the way he nodded Inoue’s left hook.
Ubali has stopped six of his last eight. Gets his early victories by smashing opponents. In front of Villanueva in his first defense, Oubaali put his opponent under pressure with his feet, repelling every punch thrown at him and after six rounds, Villanueva was shot down and decided he didn’t want to anymore.
There’s a chance, a good chance, that Oubaali is too fresh and too busy for a Donaire. The Donaire is also likely too big and too tough.
It’s the Donaire, in a fanciful show, to win a late stop for me.
Judgment Donner could cement his place in boxing history with another title at the age of 38.
