The World Health Organization has warned that smokers face a 40-50% greater risk of developing severe disease and dying from the Covid-19 virus.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the Organization, said: Smokers face up to 50% greater risk of severe disease and death due to Coronavirus-19, so quitting smoking is the best thing smokers can do to reduce the risk of infection with Corona, as well as the risk of cancer, heart disease and respiratory diseases.

Ghebreyesus urged all countries to do their part by joining the organization’s campaign “Decide to quit tobacco use today!” Creating tobacco-free environments provides people with the information, support, and tools they need to quit smoking and quit forever.

The World Health Organization announced today the WHO Director-General’s awards for the World No Tobacco Day, which were received by the Indian Minister of Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan and the Tobacco Control Research Group at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom.
