In March, Venice announced a ban on the use of large ships, including cruise ships and shipping containers, due to residents’ fears of pollution and underwater erosion of the city’s foundations.
The ban will come into force only after new terminals are built to lay new routes in the city center.
Some residents boarded boats and lined the streets in protest as the first cruise ship left the city after the coronavirus.
Other residents welcomed the return of the tourist season and new jobs.
