Al Jazeera News Channel journalist Givara Boudeiri was brutally arrested by the Israeli occupying forces while covering demonstrations in the occupied Sheikh Jarrah region of East Jerusalem. Al Jazeera blames the Israeli government for her well-being and demands her immediate release. Al JazeeraCameraman Nabil Mazzavi’s camera was also destroyed by the Israeli authorities during the reportage.

Commenting on the arrest, Dr. Mostefa Suag, Acting Director General, said: “We condemn in the strongest terms the actions of the Israeli occupying forces. Systematic attacks on our journalists are in complete violation of all international conventions. Today’s violent actions by the Israeli occupying forces against Givar Boudeiri and Nabil Mazzavi completely ignore the fundamental human rights of journalists. ”

He further stated:

Silencing journalists by intimidating them has become routine for the Israeli authorities, as evidenced by recent weeks in Gaza and occupied Jerusalem. These actions cannot be viewed in isolation. Today’s arrests come just two weeks after the blast and destruction Al-Jalaa building, which housed the offices of Al Jazeera and other media in Gaza. Such attempts to prevent journalists from fulfilling their professional duty of informing the world and covering local events is a crime against the journalistic profession.

Al Jazeera calls on the international community of journalistic organizations and human rights bodies to join forces to condemn the Israeli government’s actions and to call for the immediate release of Givara Boudeiri and all other detained journalists so that they can pursue their profession without fear or intimidation.

Journalism is not a crime.
