The official inauguration of Colonel Asimi Geta as interim President of Mali will take place on Monday, at a time when the Sahel region remains more vulnerable to violence than ever.
The inauguration of the 37-year-old colonel, who leads this poor and unstable country, begins at 10 am (GMT and local) at the Bamako International Convention Center.
This comes at a time when France and Mali’s other military partners are demanding assurances that a new civilian prime minister will be appointed and that elections will take place in February 2022 that will bring civilians back to power.
Mali, a country important to stability in the Sahel region, has witnessed the second coup in nine months by Asimi Geta and his group of military personnel.
During the first coup on August 18, 2020, the military toppled President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. At the time, the military council, under international pressure, committed itself to an 18-month transition period led by civilians. Subsequently, the Constitutional Court announced the appointment of this officer as acting president.
