Biden and Fauci visited a site at an Abyssinian Baptist church in the Harlem area of New York. New York Senator Kirstin Gillibrand (D) joined the pair locally.

The First Lady met with workers registering patients for the COVID-19 vaccination, as well as a 14-year-old boy who was vaccinated on site.

“Are you okay?” Biden asked the boy. “You are 14, so you are exactly who we aspire to. We definitely want people 12 and older to get vaccinated. “

The first lady offered to hold the boy’s hand while he received this injection, but the workers and the first lady were seen laughing when the boy shook his head.

Biden also greeted a 92-year-old woman, Annette Gauseney, who has come to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Gausney said her grandson convinced her to get an injection, and Biden thanked the woman “for the example.”

The first lady stressed that health officials across the country are working to vaccinate adolescents and are also offering vaccines in places that local communities trust, such as churches, according to the pool.

“The people in this community trust this church and trust the people in the church. And that’s how we’re going to do it, you know, through some religious community to go to a congregation or block to say, “Come and get the vaccine,” Biden said.

Fauci added that COVID-19 vaccines are the “means to end” the pandemic.

But not everyone in attendance greeted the senior health official.

About 75 protesters also gathered outside the church and held posters criticizing the Fauci vaccination and COVID-19, including the words “Fauci = criminal”, “Fuck your Covid passports”, “No masks, no vaccines, no fluoride.” and more. The protesters also chanted “Freedom over fear” and “Fauci of fire”.

One of the demonstrators, 38-year-old Maxine Garrett, said she would not receive the COVID-19 vaccine, saying officials were unaware of the “long-term” effects of the injection.

The visit came as the Biden administration stepped up its nationwide vaccination efforts, targeting hard-to-reach, unvaccinated Americans as cases continue to decline but vaccination rates are slowing.
