The report said an official who worked for Japan’s National Olympic Organization apparently committed suicide in the Tokyo subway system. The Olympic Games will kick off in the Japanese capital next month.
Yasushi Moriya, head of the Japan Olympic Committee’s accounting department, jumped in front of a Tokyo subway train on Monday morning, Nippon TV News24 reported, citing sources in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police.
According to the report, 52-year-old Moriya was identified by his ID. He was taken to hospital and died of his injuries about two hours later. While police are still looking into the details, Moria’s death is considered a suicide, the report said.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics, canceled last year due to the pandemic, will begin on July 23rd and conclude on August 8th.
Sports events will be held without foreign fans and in compliance with all security measures. A series of polls published last month showed that most people in Japan are in favor of canceling or postponing games due to Covid-19.
Meanwhile, a June 4-6 poll by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper showed attitudes towards the games could change, with 50% believing the Olympics should continue as planned, while 48% said they should be canceled.
