A visitor who was caught at Dubai airport with a lot of marijuana said he thought it was a pack of bananas.
The man was taken to court, where he claimed that a compatriot had given him a bag allegedly containing bananas to hand over to a man in the UAE in exchange for paying his travel expenses and helping him find a job in the UAE.
According to Emarat Al Yum, the Dubai Criminal Court rejected the man’s claim and sentenced him to 10 years in prison and a fine of AED 50,000.
An African citizen arrived at Terminal 3 of Dubai Airport last November. While scanning his luggage, the customs officers noticed objects of suspicious density in the bags.
Inspectors found two large packages of a plant-derived substance that was later revealed to be marijuana.
The defendant denied knowing about drugs and claimed that a man in his country asked him to deliver two bags of bananas to another person in Dubai. He denied any information that they contained drugs.
