The three-story dilapidated building collapsed after heavy monsoon rains in the west of the country. Indian Police said Thursday that at least 11 people were killed and seven others were injured in the city of Mumbai.

According to police officer Ravindra Kadam, dozens of rescuers have cleared the rubble to find residents who may still be trapped.

Kadam said the building collapsed late Wednesday night. Heavy monsoon rains during the day flooded several parts of the city, which is India’s financial and entertainment capital.

New Delhi TV reported that the building collapsed onto another structure in a slum in Malad West, Mumbai.

Mumbai received 222 millimeters (8 inches) of rain in 12 hours. Tidal waves, reaching heights of 4.6 meters (13 feet), prevented rain from diverting, and roads, railways and areas remained swampy.

In India, during the rainy season from June to September, buildings collapse frequently when heavy rains weaken the foundations of poorly built structures.

In 2019, a three-story building collapsed in a hilly area in the northern Indian city of Solan after heavy rains, killing 14 people. In the same year, a four-story building collapsed in Mumbai, killing 10 people.
