According to firefighters, eight people were seriously injured in the collapse in the city of Gwangju.
At least nine people were killed and eight seriously injured in South Korea when a five-story building, which was in the process of being demolished, suddenly collapsed on a bus, local fire officials said.
The accident occurred Wednesday afternoon when a bus was pulled over on a street near a demolition site in Gwangju, about 270 kilometers (168 mi) southwest of the capital Seoul, officials from the Gwangju fire department said.
Dramatic television footage showed the bus, which was carrying 17 people, was buried in debris and suffocated by a huge cloud of dust when the structure collapsed.
Yang Ik-jae, a store manager across the street from the construction site, said he ran out into the street, shocked by a loud noise that made him feel like “the earth was shaking.”
“I couldn’t see the road clearly, as if it were shrouded in thick fog,” he told the Yonhap news agency. “I checked the CCTV system and found that the building had collapsed on the bus.”
The cause of the collapse is unclear, officials said and a police investigation is currently underway.
All workers at the site of the demolition were evacuated prior to the collapse.
South Korea is taking steps to improve the safety performance of its infrastructure following a series of disasters.
In 1995, a department store collapse killed more than 500 people in the worst peacetime disaster in the country. As a result of the collapse of the bridge, 49 people died a year earlier.
