This happened during a virtual forum organized yesterday by the National Archives entitled “The Strategic Role of the National Archives of the United Arab Emirates in Preserving the Memory of the Nation.”
The Director General of the National Archives has reviewed the most important milestones that the National Archives has gone through since its inception as an office for documents and research under the leadership of the builder and founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – may God rest his soul. – in 1968 AD, then the development that it went through when it became a document and research center, then a document and research center and a national document and research center, and at this stage Federal Law No. 7 of 2008 was issued, according to to which archives were organized in more than 300 government institutions, and a real awareness of the importance of archives in preserving the memory of the nation began. He touched upon the outstanding experience of establishing the National Archives of the Center for Conservation and Restoration in accordance with the generous instructions of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Presidential Affairs. The forum, which was attended by a large number of archival leaders in the country’s official institutions, focused on keeping up with the National Archives with artificial intelligence techniques that will have a big impact on archiving and documentation and will significantly reduce time and effort that cannot be accounted for. in indexing, preserving, archiving and providing access to a vast array of documents, the National Archives is in the process of collaborating with ten countries to activate this cutting-edge technology.
He explained the importance of the decision to transfer the competence of the National Library from the Ministry of Culture and Youth to the National Archives, since the library is an intellectual archive for preserving and archiving the read intellectual products in the country from damage and loss and making it available to the public and future generations, and this lies in based on the competence of the National Archives, emphasizing that such a decision is clear evidence of the confidence that wise leadership gives to the National Archives.
Al-Raisi explained the importance of the digital archive of the Persian Gulf, which was created by the National Archives in collaboration with the British Archives, as this site shows its visitors on the Internet more than 500,000 historical documents related to the United Arab countries. The Emirates and the Gulf region and stressed that this site will provide in the next phase half a million more documents from the British archives, as well as from other archives that have had a historical relationship with the UAE.
Al-Raisi encouraged students to continue their studies in the master’s degree, which will be opened by the National Archives in cooperation with the Sorbonne University – Abu Dhabi in the field of records management and archival sciences. In this context, His Excellency thanked the Sorbonne University – Abu Dhabi for constructive cooperation in the development of national personnel in the field of document management and archival sciences. A professional certificate was issued in the field of document management and archival science, then a bachelor’s degree in document management and archival science, and today the final preparation for the launch of the Specialized Master’s degree in record keeping and archiving is underway.
In turn, Hamad Abdullah Al-Mutairi, Director of the Archives Department of the National Archives, spoke about the global archives and the problems they face, and also discussed the role of the National Archives in supporting the organization of archives in the country, starting with an assessment of the state of the archive, followed by technical advice. , the training of specialized personnel and the organization of destruction operations, as well as the transformation of the historical archive, and he spoke about episodes of the archival series in the National Archives and concluded his speech with the words of the future aspirations of the National Archives.
Al-Mutairi explained the most important risks that threaten documents in both paper and electronic form, highlighting the importance of electronic attacks, which are growing to more than 300,000 attacks, and these attacks are causing great damage to the world’s electronic archives, in light of huge expectations. increasing electronic archives.
For her part, Professor Silvia Serrano, Director of the Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi, spoke about the training and qualifications of national personnel specializing in archiving and documentation, in cooperation with the Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi and the National Archives, stressing the importance of archiving, since it is the key to the development and progress of nations and societies. She then pointed to the fruitful and close collaboration between the Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi and the National Archives, which resulted in 3 academic programs being offered: a Bachelor’s Degree in Document Management and Archival Sciences, a Professional Certificate in Document and Archives Management, and a Master in Document Management. and archival research.
She referred to the membership of the Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi in InterPARES, a program dedicated to the development of the knowledge necessary to preserve digitally created and stored documents in the long term, and its membership in the International Council on Archives (ICA).
