Panthers star Apisai Koroisau is the subject of an NRL investigation for a COVID-19 breach following allegations that he snuck a woman into the NSW Blues bubble during the recently concluded State of Origin series.
The New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) was not aware of the incident until Thursday but immediately reported it to the NRL after being notified.
“Once we became aware of the allegations, we immediately referred them to the NRL,” NSWRL boss Dave Trodden told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“The NRL is currently conducting an investigation. We are fully cooperating with the NRL so that they can complete their investigation satisfactorily.”
According to 9News Sydney’s Danny Weidler, Penrith was also notified “late” on Thursday by the NRL of the impending investigation into Koroisau’s actions.
Koroisau is said to have smuggled a woman into the Blues’ biosafe bubble on two separate occasions, with the second coming on the day of Game Two on June 27.
The 28-year-old was the 18th man for Brad Fittler’s side in the first two games of the series before making his State of Origin debut in the 20-18 Origin III defeat to the Gold Coast, where he scored a try.
The investigation into Koroisau will be of particular interest to Queensland’s State of Origin camp, after Maroon player Jai Arrow was suspended for a similar incident.
Arrow was banned from two games and fined $35,000 for bringing a woman into the Sheraton Grand Mirage in Queensland.
In addition to the NRL sanctions, the Queensland Rugby League has also weighed its own set of sanctions for the Souths star, including the prospect of being banned from next year’s State of Origin series.
