The Atlanta Braves didn’t have to give up much last week to take over outfielder Joc Pederson. With that, they can spin to acquire one of these three major players.
The first half of the season was hell for the Atlanta Braves due to the variety of injuries they endured. From starting pitcher Mike Soroka to star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr., the Braves haven’t had it easy.
When Acuña tore his ACL, the Braves called the Chicago Cubs to negotiate a deal for outfielder Joc Pederson. All it took was for the Braves to bid farewell to prospect Bryce Ball. Scouts told FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray that the Cubs “pulled the trigger too quickly,” arguing that Ball is best as a designated batter.
Since the Braves don’t give up much for Pederson, General Manager Alex Anthopoulos can explore if bigger fish are coming into the ocean. If Atlanta chooses to go this route, here are three players to target.
3. Kris Bryant
If the Cubs accepted what the scouts said was a disappointing offer, the Braves should consider making another call to the Windy City team to get perhaps their biggest trade piece by the deadline – Kris Bryant.
The former NL MVP 2016 has been the subject of trade rumors for years. But the one team that was linked to him quite often during that period was the Braves. Still, that was when Bryant was mostly a third baseman. Now Bryant’s value is going through the roof like a utility man.
Bryant offers teams that are hopeful after the season the gift of versatility. The 29-year-old played in the third, first and all three positions of the outfield. That should definitely grab the attention of the Braves, who are in the midst of the competitive NL East division race.
In 86 games this season, Bryant cut .264/.346/.489 while noting 16 home runs, 48 RBIs, 53 runs scored and 81 hits.
The Braves should consider bombarding the Cubs with phone calls to try and negotiate a deal to bring Bryant to Atlanta.
