After Kenley Jansen was booed off the field on Wednesday night, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called the Dodgers fans for it.
With a win over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers would have pulled even with their main rival for the lead in the NL West. But closer Kenley Jansen blew a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning and gave up a two-run homerun to Wilmer Flores before hitting an out.
Jansen would surrender a double and walk two to load the bases before being replaced by Victor Gonzalez, who walked himself to give the Giants a two-run lead, which she didn’t resign.
Dodgers fans chased Jensen off the mound after the failed save, and manager Dave Roberts was unenthusiastic about it after the game.
Dave Roberts calls on Dodgers fans for booing Kenley Jansen
“No one hurts more than him, to be honest. He’s worked really hard to come back, should have been an All-Star this year and he’s had a fantastic season. … He was looking forward to throwing at home. And so to not let it go well – yes, I’m disappointed to hear [the boos]. Certainly. He won’t say it, but I will.”
Jensen has lost back-to-back saves, equal to the number of saves he lost in his first 23 chances this season (36 appearances). Last Sunday against the Rockies was his first save since May 5. Before that appearance against Colorado, he had not even allowed a run since May 28 (a span of 15 appearances).
Jansen has been criticized for his inconsistency in recent seasons, and falling short when the lights were brightest in the post-season. But he has a better season in 2021, lean as it looks (3.62 FIP, 5.7 BB/9), with a 2.15 ERA even after his two recent rough outings.
Falling short against their most hated rival with part of the division lead on the line fueled the ire of Dodgers fans Wednesday night. Jansen’s comments after the game show that he knows this is the nature of his job, even though his manager felt it his duty to pass on disappointment to the fans.
