Defensive Egypt keeps Spain 0-0 in Olympic Opener

Egypt’s U23 grid against Spain at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on July 22, 2021

The Pharaohs managed to fend off an aggressive Spanish side in their first football match at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Egypt, which is in Group C with Spain, Argentina and Australia, played a defensive game against the Spaniards, with few successful offensive opportunities.

Spain, which is among the favorites to win the gold under-23 football medal at the 2020 Olympics, played a largely offensive match but failed to score against Egypt, with impressive performances from goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy and defender and captain Ahmed Hegazy.

Egypt and Spain now both have one point in Group C due to the draw.

Egypt then takes on Argentina on July 25 at 4:30 PM Tokyo time, before facing Australia on July 28 at 8:00 PM Tokyo time.
