The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported at dawn on Thursday that violent explosions had resounded in and around Homs Governorate as a result of Israeli attacks on military sites.

The observatory indicated that the defense of the Syrian regime is trying to cope with the attacks over the area.

The sources of the event stated that the attacks targeted Shayrat airport in Homs.

At dawn on Thursday, Syrian air defenses confronted Israeli missiles targeting military sites in the Al-Qusayr area of central Homs province, according to Syrian official media, during the second Israeli airstrike on Syria this week.

The Official Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted a military source as saying: “The Israeli enemy launched an airstrike from northeast Beirut targeting some points in the Al-Qusayr area of western Homs countryside.”

He added: “Our air defenses confronted the missiles of the aggression and shot down most of them, and damage was limited to equipment.”

For its part, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that “Israeli attacks have targeted Lebanese Hezbollah military sites in the Al-Dabaa and Al-Qusayr military airport area” in the western countryside of Homs.

In 2013, Hezbollah conducted its first public battles against Syrian opposition parties in the Al-Qusayr area. Syrian government forces took it in June of the same year, after a fierce battle, with his main support.

Thursday’s Israeli attacks resulted in the destruction of weapons and ammunition depots at the targeted sites, according to the observatory.

These Israeli attacks are the second this week as at least five pro-Iranian fighters were killed in Israeli shelling on their positions in northern Aleppo governorate on Monday, according to the observatory. Syrian official media had reported that Syrian air defenses had attacked Israeli missiles over the eastern countryside of Aleppo and “shot down most of them.”

In recent years, Israel has carried out dozens of attacks in Syria targeting Syrian military bases as well as Iranian and Hezbollah targets.

Israel rarely confirms carrying out attacks in Syria, but the Israeli military stated in its annual report that it bombed about 50 targets in Syria in the year 2020, without providing details.

Israel reiterates that it will continue to confront what it describes as Iran’s attempts to anchor its military presence in Syria.

Syria has witnessed a bloody conflict since 2011 that has killed nearly half a million people, caused massive damage to infrastructure and led to the displacement of millions inside and outside the country.
