A short documentary by Limerick FC called ‘Sit Down And Shut Up’ about their time against European giants Real Madrid in the 1980 European Cup will be screened at the Galway Film Fleadh.

It’s a David vs Goliath story about the opera of football, the city of Limerick and a match few remember, but three men can never forget.

The documentary will have its world premiere online at Galway Film Fleadh 2021 from July 20-25.

The short film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Cian O Connor and is funded by Limerick Arts Bursary.

The film features interviews with Limerick legends such as Des Kennedy and Kevin Fitzpatrick, as well as local fans such as Gary Spain – the historian of Limerick football, and tax collector, JJ O Dea.

The aim of the film, according to director Cian O Connor, was “not only to tell the great story of this famous match, but also to shed light on that team and the golden age of Limerick football”.

The film also wants to capture the spirit of the city of Limerick and its inhabitants, according to Cian.

Limerick FC played against Real Madrid on 17 September 1980 in what would be known today as the UEFA Champions League.

The match was played at Lansdowne Road much to the disappointment of local Limerick fans.

The match itself was a thriller with a goal from Des Kennedy and an excellent display from the Limerick team.

The film will be shown online at the prestigious Galway Film Fleadh from the above dates.

Tickets for the online screening can be purchased on the Galway Film Fleadh website.

The film is also set to run at a national film festival with screenings across the country and a YouTube release in the near future.
