An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of southwestern Panama on Wednesday, causing no casualties or property damage, authorities said.
The Institute of Geosciences at the University of Panama said the earthquake occurred at 16:15 (21:15 GMT) in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Punta Burica, in Chiriqui province.
The institute determined the epicenter of the earthquake at a depth of 11 km above sea level.
For its part, the National Civil Protection System of Panama (Sinabroek) said in a tweet on its Twitter account that “our team continues to monitor the areas where the earthquake that happened this afternoon was recorded. No damage has been reported so far.”
Sinabrück also assured that there is no danger of a tsunami from the earthquake.
Earthquakes are common in this area of ​​the Pacific Ocean, near the border with Costa Rica.
