Newcastle Police have asked the public to search for “a man with blood on his face” after another man was shot dead inside an apartment on Thursday.

Police said several people appeared to have fled the apartment on Darby Street in the inner suburb of Cox Hill after the fatal shooting, including a man and woman who were of particular police interest.

“There were two people in particular, a male and a female – descriptions vary, but around the time (at the time of the shooting) they were on the run,” said Newcastle City Police District Commander Wayne Humphrey.

“It was said that he had blood on his face.”

He said the public should contact Crimestoppers “as soon as possible” if the pair are seen.

Police and paramedics rushed to the apartment around 12.45pm after members of the public called emergency services to say they heard the shooting.

A NSW ambulance spokesman said a man discovered inside the apartment had been treated for chest wounds.

But his life could not be saved.

Police confirmed that he had died, but they had not yet officially recognized him.

A police statement indicated that he died of one-shot wounds, but the NSW Ambulance Agency said there were several injuries.
