Xtra Time Web Desk: Team India took a major blow as spinner Washington Sundar has been banned from the upcoming test series against England due to a finger injury. Sundar broke his finger while hitting Mohammed Siraj on Day 2 of the exhibition game against County XI. Reserve bowler Avesh Khan also injured his left thumb and was unable to make it onto the field from Day 2. It is understood that the medium pacer has also been ruled out of the series. Three players from the touring party have dropped out of the series. Shubman Gill was previously ruled out.

“Yes, Washy has a broken finger, just like Avesh who had a thumb dislocation. Both have run out of tests and are going home,” a senior BCCI official told PTI under conditions of anonymity.

“He will also need at least five weeks to start bowling and so there is no point in keeping them here,” the source said.

Obviously, Siraj’s short ball in charge of Washington hit his fingers harder than expected and he was in excruciating pain after returning to the pavilion.

While Washington or Avesh were not regular first team players but are an integral part of the net bowlers, and the Tamil Nadu all-rounder with his superior batting skills would have been in the mix at some point in the series.

“It is pure irony that both Avesh and Washington played for the opposition and were injured. But this is sport and injuries are part of life,” the source said.

The replacements will be named shortly and it will be interesting if a Navdeep Saini or Bhuneshwar Kumar replaces Avesh and joins after the Sri Lanka series is over or Prithvi Shaw is flown as a third opener.
