Legend Pele praised his compatriot Marta, the star of the Brazilian national team, describing her as “more than just a football player” and adding that she is an “inspiration” to many after scoring in five consecutive Olympics.
The 35-year-old scored two goals in the samba team’s 5-0 win over China in the opening game at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first player or player to score in five Olympics in a row.
Three-time World Cup winner Pele wrote on Instagram: “Hi Marta, maybe you are sleeping now because you are in the other part of the world, I hope you dream about what you achieved a few hours ago, talked about, how did you today many dreams inspired?”
“Your performance means more than just a personal best, this moment inspires millions of athletes from other sports from around the world who are fighting to be recognized.”
And the player who wore the number 10 shirt, like Marta now, added: “Congratulations on your journey, you are more than just a football player, helping to build a better world thanks to your talent, in which women have more space.”
