Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN)–A huge puzzle made up of overlapping colors and motifs, dominated by red.. You’ll probably picture this scene if you’re lucky, and if you’re in the Turkish province of Antalya on the right time.
With the arrival of the summer season every year, the fields of Doshama Alti in southwestern Turkey are covered with thousands of bright carpets to form an amazing scene that attracts photography enthusiasts and lovers of traditional handmade carpets, according to the official Anatolia News Agency.
This annual spectacle was documented in July 2019 by the owner of the online Traveling Lens Photography blog, Laneel Rashid.
Thousands of carpets
The bright carpet fields piqued Rasheed’s interest when she learned about this unique tradition, which encouraged her to go to Doshama Alti with her husband to see the scene with her own eyes.
In an interview with CNN in Arabic, Rasheed said, “It was very difficult to find him because there were no signs or anything to lead you there.”
This led to a funny situation, when the duo resorted to knocking on a stranger’s door to ask for directions.
Spontaneously and generously, the man suggested he get into their car and point them in the right direction.
The American, who currently lives in Turkey, confirmed that this attracted her to live in the country, saying: “The residents are generous, wanting to share what they have and take care of others.”
Upon reaching the field, you would be surprised by the vast areas that turned from green to red due to the sheer number of carpets covering them.
“It kind of reminded me of a painting,” says Rasheed, who is interested in art. “There were many colors and designs.”
The mountains and wildlife surrounding the field also enhanced the beauty of the scene before her.
A tradition that has been going on since the 1970s
Anadolu Agency indicated that the spreading of the carpets in the fields starts in May and that they are collected again every September, a tradition that has continued in the region since the 1970s.
The pieces of carpet are spread on the fields after the rural inhabitants of the region have finished harvesting, and “this type of carpet issued in the fields of Antalya is mostly of the handmade type, using natural dyes, and thousands of them are spread until they get their true bright color,” according to the Anatolia Agency.
During her time in the fields, the American couldn’t be content to take pictures thanks to the wide variety of carpets that surrounded her on all sides. “You’ll want to go to every carpet because every carpet is really special,” she said.
Rashid wished she had a self-propelled drone to capture the panoramic view of the fields from above.
The pieces that adorn the fields come from different regions of Turkey, and they are spread over the fields to be exposed to the sun during the day and the humidity at night.
The carpets remain in the fields until their color turns light, and they are cleared of germs, being guarded all day for fear of rain.
On the way to the Doshama Alti fields, you will come across charming mountain views, wildlife and can also stop to buy fruits and agricultural products sold by the villagers along the way.
