In early June, the Cleveland Indians confirmed that they had narrowed down the list of potential new names for the franchise because they wanted a rebrand and continue with the current name and previous logo that some Native American groups and others viewed as racist.
It seems that the entire process is complete.
Cleveland.com insider Paul Hoynes reported on Thursday that Cleveland has chosen a new name for the club, but isn’t ready to reveal it yet. A source has not confirmed or denied an announcement, but it is believed the franchise will be rebranded by the start of the 2022 MLB regular season.
A total of 1,198 names were collected as part of a process that also included 140 hours of conversations with local baseball fans, community leaders and current Cleveland baseball staff. Cleveland stopped using the Chief Wahoo logo on merchandise after the 2018 season.
It was previously reported that the rebrand will feature an actual middle name rather than something akin to the NFL’s Washington Football Team. Cleveland Guardians, Cleveland Spiders and Cleveland Avengers are among the names rumored to be associated with the franchise, but the club has provided few hints.
