The Abu Dhabi Health Services Company “SEHA” emphasized the importance of parents playing their role in guiding their children to follow the rules of proper use of modern technology, in order to reduce the risks to their bodies and brains.

She added: “The young people are more exposed than others to the dangers of modern technology, as their bodies and brains are still in the stage of development and growth, and therefore some consequences associated with the excessive use of technology in this age group, especially eye fatigue in young people, which is caused by prolonged staring at the screens of electronic devices, excessive exposure to glare and brightness when these devices are held close to their faces, and the onset of of vision problems accelerating with the increase in screen time, as well as the negative effects of prolonged incorrect posture.
Al-Marzouki explained that one of the negative effects of long-term tablet use is weight gain due to the lack of exercise that comes with sitting for long periods and following a more stable lifestyle, as most children prefer to play video games or use drugs. smart devices to spend their time outdoors, and therefore the lack of exercise and physical activity, along with eating unhealthy foods, inevitably lead to weight gain, in addition to the tangible effects of overuse of technological devices on mood swings, depression and sleep quality in young children, which can increase their levels of stress and anxiety and lead to nervousness, show aggressive behavior.
She pointed out that the exceptional circumstances imposed on the world by the “Covid-19” pandemic, as well as distance learning, which has left young people unable to do activities, exercises and spend more time in front of screens, are the problems of eye fatigue, weight gain, obesity and mental health in the young children, with a marked increase in cases of depression caused by a lack of social interaction.

She also advised them to be patient when dealing with their children, as the circumstances of the spread of the pandemic are impacting everyone, especially the young, and it is important to take some time to talk and dialogue with them. them, know and understand their feelings, while reassuring and supporting them, which helps immensely in improving their mental health.
She also urged parents to notice signs of pain or stress in young children’s eyes, such as difficulty seeing from a certain distance or a sense of blurred vision, headaches, sleep disturbances, sudden weight gain, feelings of depression, angry and nervous reactions , etc., and when any of these signs and symptoms are apparent, parents should rush to see a specialist pediatrician, get appropriate advice, and take steps to prevent the worsening of these symptoms.
She emphasized the importance of good role models, which are necessary for young people who tend to imitate adults around them, and pointed to the need for parents to spend more time with their children, invent new ways of perform activities and use modern technological devices, in the presence of young children, and stay away from them as much as possible.
