This is a story in development. Now it has come to a head, and we have a timeline of when the Sooners and Longhorns will make the move from the Big 12 to the SEC.
There are obvious implications for all sports, but college football is where the huge money comes in for all these powerful programs.
Oklahoma has continued its phenomenal run into the post-Bob Stoops era thanks to the genius of Lincoln Riley. The Sooners coach has promoted the development of eventual No. 1 overall draft picks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.
Riley is entering his second season with Spencer Rattler as his starting quarterback. Rattler could be the third QB to help Riley take first in the NFL Draft.
Meanwhile, Texas football is going through a period of transition under new head coach Steve Sarkisian. Formerly the coach at Washington and USC, Sarkisian dealt with substance abuse issues before recovering, which was highlighted by his last stint as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, which led to the Crimson Tide winning the national championship last year.
The greater impact of Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC is difficult to quantify. TV contracts will no doubt be huge, total revenue will explode and it could create a knock-on effect where the Power Five conferences also see a lot of team movement.
