An Alabama police officer was shot dead early Tuesday while on duty.
Selma police officer Marquis Moorer, 25, was shot dead between 3:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Tuesday. Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said.
Moore’s significant other was also wounded by a gunshot. The woman’s name was not released, but she was taken to a local hospital.
“The Selma Police Department is in ruins,” Chief Kenta Fulford told a news conference Tuesday. “We are asking the community for your prayers.”
Jackson continued, “Moorer was a working officer. Soon after joining the police force, he was praised for arresting Selma’s first heroin in a decade in 2019.
No suspects have been arrested in the deaths and state police, along with local officials and members of the Drug Task Force team, are trying to find any information.
The deaths come amid protests and riots against police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement and calls from Democrats to threaten police departments across the country.
