Yesterday, a minibus carrying a local team in the Somali city of Kismayo was the victim of a terrorist attack, according to Somali media, that killed at least five people. It is related to the “GCCI” team, where more than 12 players were also injured in the accident. “They were on their way to the football stadium to play a local league game at the time of the strong explosion,” Somali police officer Sadiq Mahmoud told dpa. “We do not know the motive behind the attack. But we believe that the terrorist Al-Shabaab movement is behind it,” he added.
The terrorist attack came at a time when all the players were on the team’s bus as they moved to Jubaland to play a friendly match in preparation for the start of the new season. And Somali media reported that the bus was booby-trapped and exploded outside a police station in the coastal town of Kismayo. The incident coincided with the start of the local football league in Jubbaland state.
