New Olympic 100m champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs was tired of asking who his father was. He didn’t know and couldn’t remember meeting him.

He decided to find out.

About a year ago, the Italian sprinter first spoke to his father, who lives in Dallas, Texas.

Dad, whose name is Marcell Jacobs Sr. is now learning who is junior: Headline news everywhere as the fastest man in the world.

“I’ve lived my whole life without a father,” Jacobs said on Sunday after stunning everyone to win gold in the 100 at the Tokyo Olympics.

“And when people asked me, who is your father? (I said) ‘I don’t know. I don’t know.’ And then we tried to start a new relationship with him. That was very important to me.”

Jacobs, 26, revealed the endearing story shortly after his win at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo. He was born in El Paso, Texas, but his parents separated when he was 6 months old. He went to Italy with his mother as a baby. His father stayed in Texas.

“I never saw my father from that time again,” he said. “But I first started talking to him a year ago. Because of this, I came here with a good mentality.”

His father also messaged him for the 100 finals: “Yeah, he’ll watch (the race),” Jacobs said. “He wrote to me before the race and said, ‘You can do it, we’re with you.'”

Finding his father and building a new relationship was part of Jacobs’ pre-Olympic focus on his mental preparation and getting into the right mindset.

They made the difference, he said.

“I worked really hard with my mind. Because when I got to the really big moment, my legs weren’t working very well,” Jacobs said.

“Now my legs go really well when it’s a big moment.”
