La Liga champions Atletico Madrid announced on Monday that striker Luis Suarez will miss Uruguay’s World Cup qualifiers next month due to a knee injury.
Suarez, who scored in Atletico’s 2-2 draw against Villarreal on Sunday before being substituted, was expected to be included in the Uruguay squad for the encounters with Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.
Atletico said in a statement: “The MRI scan the player underwent showed a problem in the back of his left knee. The club’s medical staff informed the Uruguayan federation and banned the player from qualifying for the World Cup. 2022.
Suarez joins Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani on the absentee list after the Uruguayan Football Association announced the cancellation of the striker’s call-up to the roster earlier on Monday.
