Veteran Afghan strongmen to form new front for talks with Taliban

A group of experienced Afghan leaders, including two regional strongmen, are eager for talks with the Taliban and plan to meet within weeks to form a new front for negotiating the country’s next government, said a member of a group. Khalid Noor, son of Atta Mohammad Noor, the once powerful governor of Balkh province in northern Afghanistan, said the group includes ethnic Uzbek leader Abdul Rashid Dostum and others who oppose the Taliban takeover. “We prefer to negotiate collectively because it is not the case that Afghanistan’s problem will be solved by one of us alone,” the 27-year-old Norwegian told Reuters in an interview from an unknown location.
