Tennessee will kick off Joe Milton III as quarterback for his season-opening game against Bowling Green on Thursday night.
Freshman coach Josh Heupel announced the decision during a press conference Monday, citing Milton’s skills and decision-making.
In April, Milton made the move from Michigan to Tennessee, where he started last season as a starter before finally taking the bench.
In five appearances with the Wolverines, Milton completed 80 of 141 passes for 1,077 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.
Milton defeated former Virginia Tech transfer Hendon Hooker and sophomore Harrison Bailey to become the Vols’ Week 1 starter.
When asked if he could play two quarterbacks, Heupel said he believes “the strength of one position can never be one man.”
“They all have to prepare like the appetizer,” he added. “I expect Joe to get the ball first and play his ass in a really good way.”
Heupel, who took over the program in January after three seasons as head coach at UCF, said both Hooker and Bailey handled the decision “in a very positive way.”
