According to CNN Senior International Correspondent Sam Kiley, the Taliban are in control of an insurgency as ISIS-K continues to exert pressure to try to undermine and potentially take over them.
“Most of al-Qaeda was taken over by ISIS in northern Syria and then they took over large amounts of land – so this will be seen by them as an opportunity,” he told Sky News Australia.
“Then they’ll have the warlord issue across the country – they’ve folded themselves into the Taliban, but they’ll want to see rewards for doing that, or they’ll be fickle too.
“So this is certainly not the end of the conflict within the Taliban.”
Mr Riley said the overall situation would be very fragile and could quickly turn into civil war.
“It’s vulnerable, extremely vulnerable.”
