Mercedes F1 is finally ready to complete the 2022 driver lineup.
Widespread speculation is that Mercedes F1 will soon confirm that Valtteri Bottas will hand over the seat to George Russell next year. In the process, Mercedes will announce Bottas’ departure for this season only and Alfa Romeo will announce a contract with Bottas in 2022.
This could all happen over the weekend of Monza, where the F1 Italian Grand Prix will take place. It is believed that Kimi Raikkonen will retire this season, George Russell will become Lewis Hamilton’s teammate and Valtteri Bottas will join Alfa Romeo.
Toto Wolff, boss of the Mercedes F1 team, said decisions were made about George Russell and Valtteri Bottas during the weekend of the F1 Belgian Grand Prix.
Daimler CEO Ora Kerenius, who visited Spa-Francorchamps with Mercedes F1, added that “it will be announced at the appropriate time.”
Valtteri Bottas has published a pen and paper photo in his Instagram story against the backdrop of his home in Monaco, openly hinting at a new deal.
In addition, a photo of the Mercedes road car with the Mercedes F1 livery is also released. It is speculated that this was a gift from Mercedes as a token of gratitude to Bottas, who has been Hamilton’s teammate for the past five years.
“If they didn’t bring Russell to Mercedes it would be complete mismanagement,” former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher told Sky Deutschland after the F1 Belgian Grand Prix.
“It would be a mistake, not only for the team, but also for the future.”
“Lewis Hamilton doesn’t race that long for his age, so Toto Wolff is responsible for thinking about the future and I think the decision has already been made,” said Ralf Schumacher.
