A gigantic column of black smoke is visible for miles around. On the edge of the industrial area of Feuchère in Compans, near Mitry-Mory, along the D 212 leading from Claye-Souilly to the eastern entrance to the Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport. About sixty firefighters are working on a vacant lot in rue Hélène Boselli, between two logistics warehouses. Road traffic was not interrupted, nor was air traffic because the southern tracks of Roissy are very close.
A fire has started for unknown reasons in a camp occupied by some 300 Roma. It quickly spread to precarious homes built by their residents for nearly a year. He destroyed the entire camp, detonating countless gas cylinders and hurling them into the air like projectiles.
A security perimeter has been set up around the intervention area to avoid secondary casualties. At 1:15 p.m., explosions sounded again. We are talking about gas used for cooking or heating, as well as acetylene used for cutting metals.
The eviction of the camp was rejected by the court of Bobigny . in early 2021
The operational center of the departmental fire and rescue service of Seine-et-Marne sent a high-performance foam truck to the site. This heavy-duty means of dealing with a large-scale fire arrived on the scene before 1 p.m. to throw large amounts of extinguishing agents on the fire.
A command group is also on site to direct the operations of the 60 firefighters involved in the intervention. A technical advisor with expertise in chemical risks is also on hand to analyze the situation and determine the actions to be taken. The fire service’s fear of businesses adjacent to the disaster is that the fire will spread to tires salvaged by the camp’s residents. In addition, the fire took place in front of the Shell gas station, reserved for trucks and a few tens of meters away, on the other side of the D212.
At 1 p.m., neither the fire service nor the police had any idea of the victim. According to our information on the spot, the evacuated camp residents had already fled before they were even received. Joël Marion, the mayor (PCF) of Compans does not hide his anger and says he is shocked.
According to him, the expulsion of the inhabitants of this camp was requested by Aéroports de Paris, owner of the land where the Roma camp was located. But in early 2021, the Bobigny court rejected this appeal. The Roma were left with an estimated 300 on the last day of August.
Remediation and restoration of the site can cost up to 300,000 euros
Since the land has been made available by ADP to the municipality that would carry out a project there, the mayor does not intend to pay the bill for the evacuation of waste and rubble, remediation and restoration. 250,000 euros and 300,000 euros.
Moreover, when the fire broke out on the land of ADP, it was the police of the sRoissy Airport Proximity Security Service, dependent on the Police Headquarters and located in Tremblay-en-France (Seine-Saint-Denis), who are competent in the matter.
In addition, an accidental fire broke out in the Roma camp last December, mostly from Moldova, located in Vaux-le-Penil. The origin of the fire was linked to an underground electrical connection. Three gas cylinders had exploded on this site with 800 people, without causing any casualties. Significant smoke development forced the two nearby stores, Lidl and Intermarché, to be evacuated for three hours.
