An elderly man has been found dead after a fire broke out in a grandmother’s apartment in southwest Sydney on Tuesday afternoon.
NSW Fire and Rescue Director Scott Dodson said firefighters were called to a property in Belmont Road, Glenfield, around 4.15pm after multiple reports of a house fire.
He said that seven crews arrived at the scene to find a severe fire burning in the back of the building.
“The fire was very fierce and well developed,” said Superintendent Dodson.
The flames were so strong that firefighters had difficulty getting through.
Once the fire was under control, firefighters found a dead elderly man.
“The fire hit the house next door, but the firefighters were able to stop the spread with their swift fire attack.”
Superintendent Dodson said the cause of the fire was not yet known, but investigations were ongoing.
About 30 firefighters were battling the blaze at the height of the blaze, and a crew member remained at the scene on Tuesday evening.
