England’s goal of winning their first major trophy since 1966 left them heartbreakingly short on the EUROs, but all the attention is quickly turning to the World Cup in just over 12 months. Hungary will face the Three Lions in the first of three qualifiers over the next seven days.
Preview World Cup Qualifying
It’s fair to say that England who made their way to the European Championship final were fully embraced by home support. However, that run ended up falling short, as they were defeated by Italy in the final of the competition. Either way, there were no shortage of standout moments from that run, including a famous Wembley win against Germany, England’s biggest knockout win in history against Ukraine and a semi-final success for the first time since 1966. should now all be used in preparation for the World Cup in Qatar, but before the competition kicks off, the Three Lions must qualify. They already seem to have one foot in the league after three wins out of three so far. One such win was a 2-1 success against Poland at Wembley, when Harry Kane and Harry Maguire scored the goals.
Hungary appears to be in direct competition with Poland for second place in the group as they started their campaign with two wins and a draw. They were held by Poland in the opening game before putting them in a promising position with wins against San Marino and Andorra. Confidence in the camp will be high as they narrowly missed a place in the EURO knockout stage after a pulsating finish in their group of death. After taking a point against France, a win would have been enough to keep them going. They led Germany after a goal from Andras Schafer, but their hearts broke six minutes before time when Leon Goretzka equalized for the Germans.
Hungary vs England Head to Head
Hungary has beaten England just five times in 22 encounters. Their last win against England came back in the 1962 World Cup. England have won five of the previous six matches between the countries, with their most recent win in an international friendly in 2010.
Hungary vs England Prediction
Hungary was certainly much more competitive than many on the EUROS had imagined, but England are currently in the midst of their brightest generation in over 50 years. The Three Lions should take another step towards the World Cup with another win.
