Payne Haas contract, Brisbane Broncos, Chris Orr, Sonny Bill Williams, Danny Weidler, updates

Brisbane are praying that Payne Haas’ contract break will not see the star leave the club as a dispute with his manager over his current deal continues.

Haas is said to be frustrated by the deal his manager, Chris Orr, who also cares for Broncos coach Kevin Walters, got him.

The 21-year-old prop feels he is not being paid what he’s worth compared to recently departed prop Matt Lodge and Broncos teammate Thomas Flegler.

“At the moment he is being mentored by Sonny Bill Williams,” Channel 9 reporter Danny Weidler told the Big Sports Breakfast.

“There’s a bit of fear in the Brisbane camp that they don’t know if he’s going to go on and stay with the club.

“At this stage there is no indication that he will leave. He has three years left. He is not happy with the money he has.

“He compares what he earns to people like Lodge at $875,000 and to Flegler who made more than he and others.

“He’s looking at those numbers now and he thinks he doesn’t have the best deal. This is going to play out, but for the sake of the Broncos, they hope they can sort it out soon.”

Haas will be paid $550,000 this year for a contract that runs until the end of 2024.

Weidler said Haas’ relationship with Orr, who led Williams before signing with Khoder Nasser and quitting for the French Rugby Union, was on rocky ground.

“There’s a lot of drama about his manager and his relationship with him,” Weidler said.

“The media in Brisbane tried to report that a six-year deal had been struck. The truth is that his manager, Chris Orr, and Payne Haas have a dispute.

“Chris Orr asked for all transactions to be stopped. The Broncos are well aware of the issues and they hope it doesn’t somehow get through to this being turned against the Brisbane club as well.”
