Red Bull F1 Motorsport Adviser Dr. Helmut Marko admits Red Bull is not proud of winning the Belgian Grand Prix, the shortest F1 race in history, with just two laps led by a safety car.
Due to heavy rain, the race was postponed from the original start time and the organizers continued to monitor the situation pending the resumption of the event. After more than three hours the weather did not improve, so the race was resumed under the safety car and the red flag was again issued.
Shortly afterwards it was announced that the Grand Prix would not be resumed and that half points would be awarded instead. Max Verstappen won, George Russell second and Lewis Hamilton third.
This helped Max Verstappen and Red Bull close the gap with their rivals in the championship, but Helmut Marko was not happy with the handling of the event.
“We are proud of this victory,” Helmut Marko told Sky F1.
“I think the organizers and officials have tried everything to end the race so that this compromised solution meets their obligations.”
“There was a lot of uncertainty. ‘Will it start? Won’t it start?’ It was not a fun race day and they need to come up with something better for the future.”
Helmut Marko believes the race cancellation could have been confirmed earlier, or the Grand Prix should have been postponed to the following day.
“If the conditions were that bad, I could have stopped right after the start instead of waiting three or four hours, or I could have postponed the race until the next day. That was possible.”
After the race, Max Verstappen was just three points behind Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ standings and Red Bull Honda narrowed the gap with Mercedes to just seven points in the Constructors’ Championship.
