Toby Greene of GWS faces AFL tribunal over umpire bump charge in final against Sydney

Toby Greene, the star of GWS Giants, faces the tribunal in a bid to keep his AFL season alive after being accused of deliberate contact with a referee.

Greene pleaded not guilty to the charges after footage showed him bumping into umpire Matt Stevic during halftime of the Giants’ final win over Sydney on Saturday.

Both Greene and Stevic presented evidence to the tribunal, with the former saying he “strongly disagreed” that the contact was intentional.

He said he was not aware that he had contacted Stevic until it was brought up with him in a post-match interview.

“I’m sorry I got in touch and it’s definitely something I wasn’t trying to do,” Greene said.

Stevic told the tribunal that he did not find Greene’s behavior aggressive and said contact was “minimal”.

“I don’t think it looks good for the game. I’d say there’s an element of disrespect,” Stevic said.

Greene could face a multiple match ban if found guilty.

The Giants will face Geelong in a semifinal on Friday evening in Perth.

More to come.
