Rio Ferdinand says he allegedly told Cristiano Ronaldo to ‘sit down’ when the Portuguese star began barking instructions from the sidelines during Manchester United’s loss to Young Boys.

The 36-year-old continued his excellent start to life at the club by opening the scoring in Tuesday’s Champions League group opening game, although United ended up having a miserable night in Bern.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was shown a straight red card shortly before half-time and Young Boys besieged United’s goal in the second period by scoring twice and winning 2-1 thanks to a disastrous stoppage time goal.

Ronaldo, as well as compatriot Bruno Fernandes, were withdrawn in the 72nd minute of the game – a decision that led to criticism of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for being too defensive.

But instead of taking his place on the bench with the rest of the team, Ronaldo stood up and shouted instructions from the tech room, side by side with Solskjaer, while Fernandes joined in too.

It’s not an uncommon sight to see Ronaldo sneaking down the sidelines, as he did after coming out with Portugal in the Euro 2016 final, although former United team-mate Ferdinand didn’t seem overly impressed.

Commenting on Ronaldo’s antics at BT Sport, the former defender said: “If I’m the manager I have to be honest, I tell him to sit down.”

Fellow expert Peter Crouch agreed, saying, “If I’m on the couch too, I’ll tell him to sit down. But he’s Cristiano, we’ll let him do it.’

Ferdinand softened his attitude a little and continued, “I see. You know, with Cristiano people say, “Oh, it’s bravado, it’s for the fans”. He’s just a passionate man. He wants to win, he’s desperate to win, and he can’t hold back.

“If that means going there and standing next to the manager, yelling instructions and so on, then so be it. If it’s someone of his stature and stature, how can you argue with that?’

On the decision to substitute Ronaldo and Fernandes after 72 minutes, Solskjaer explained: “The game had lasted 70 minutes, they had played a lot on Saturday and today. We wanted Nemanja Matic’s experience to hold Jesse Lingard’s ball and legs.”
