The weather seems to be cooperating and the passengers are eager to go: SpaceX’s first space tourists were a picture of a quiet Tuesday as they prepared for a three-day mission to orbit the Earth.
“No jitters, excited to get started!” American billionaire Jared Isaacman told reporters when asked about his state of mind at a press conference.
Behind him towered the gigantic Falcon 9 rocket, which will carry the four-man, all civilian crew for the mission, dubbed Inspiration4.
“All the jitters are the good kind,” added 29-year-old physician assistant Hayley Arceneaux. “I’m just so excited to come here tomorrow.”
Chris Sembroski, a 42-year-old Air Force veteran, even likened the extraordinary journey to a “motorhome” ride.
It’s not far away: The Dragon Capsule’s interior offers its occupants a mere eight by four meters (27 by 13 feet) of space.
“You just wrap yourself in (sleeping bags) so you don’t float together in the middle of the night!” he joked.
They all said they got along well, even though they didn’t know each other until they only started training about six months ago.
Isaacman, who had chartered the mission at his expense, held a competition to choose the three to join him.
“Since the announcement…every day has been the best day of my life, and it just gets better,” said Sian Proctor, a 51-year-old geology professor who will become the first African-American woman to take the role of “pilot on a space flight.
She was clearly moved by the occasion and said she and the crew had a phone conversation with former First Lady Michelle Obama.
“We had a really nice conversation that will stay with you for the rest of my life.”
A launch window begins on Wednesday at 20:02 (002 GMT Thursday).
“Right now the weather is good,” said Benji Reed, SpaceX’s chief of manned missions.
