McCullum stressed that Morgan “led the side brilliantly” © BCCI/IPL
KKR admitted coach Brendon McCullum that the team expected more runs from captain Eoin Morgan, but emphasized that he is not too worried about the lack of outs. Kolkata Knight Riders slipped to their seventh defeat – a five-wicket loss to the Punjab Kings – to make things difficult for their playoff chances.
Morgan has so far scored 109 runs in 11 innings in IPL 2021 with an average of 10.98 and a strike rate of 100.92. While there have been several instances of franchises changing their captains due to a lack of runs, KKR has emphasized that Morgan will remain in the role. McCullum said Morgan has “led the side brilliantly” while some of the other factors have worked for the KKR captain as well. The fact that England analyst Nathan Leamon is working with Morgan means that KKR cannot afford a captaincy change and wants that relationship to continue until the end of the tournament.
“He’s one of our senior players. He’s one of our international hitters and in his own head he would have liked to contribute more points,” McCullum said. “I think he’s got the captaincy really good. But look, you want some more runs from him, there’s no doubt about that. You need runs from your foreign players and especially in those important places. I’m convinced he will come okay. Some guys go really well.”
The injury to the form of Andre Russell and Morgan forced KKR to bolster their punching power against PBKS and, in hindsight, the decision to have just four frontline bowlers backfired. “We have several options,” McCullum noted. “You make certain decisions when you’re a coach and you have to do that on gut feeling too. (Tim) Seifert did really well when he played for TKR in CPL, he did really well in the midfield. We definitely had a good start and that meant we shuffled him behind Morgan and DK.
“When you take out Russell, it’s always hard to balance your side. We came home to Sharjah, but we felt a batter short. We felt like if we’re able to play the extra batter, we’ll get it.” bowling from Venkatesh Iyer and Rana who is a very reserved bowler When you knock out one of your great players who happens to be an all rounder you always have that delicate balance of trying to balance your side You have to either going with your batting strong or bowling strong. In hindsight, when we had 160, it would have been nice to have another bowler.”
KKR, who have ten points from 12 matches, now have to win their next two matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals and hope other results will also have their way.
