PBKS vs KKR | Dropped catches cost us the game, says Eoin Morgan as Punjab defeated Kolkata in a thriller

After losing the match to Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 5 wickets on Friday, Eoin Morgan said missed catches cost his team the match and 2 vital points in the final stages of the competition stage. Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi and captain Morgan himself dropped catches at crucial moments in the match.

Mayank Agarwal was dropped to zero by Morgan, while Nicholas Pooran was dropped to one by Rahul Tripathi on covers. Later in the match, Rahul Tripathi took a spectacular catch at midwicket, but the third umpire thought otherwise and gave KL Rahul a lifeline with Punjab needing 11 out of 10. In addition, Aiden Markram was also dropped by Nitish Rana at short third man.

“Initially we didn’t field very well, we made catches myself early and other guys that cost us. If the game gets that tight towards the end a few extra wickets would have helped us. I thought we were fighting too hard hit really well and probably had a par score No winning score on that wicket but thought the bowlers did a good job Kings played well then we fought back catches cost us I thought in real time it was out was (referring to the catch of Rahul in the 19th over) Obviously if you slow things down and analyze the third umpire thought otherwise and his decision is made that is final and we have to go with it But it would have been nice if we had gotten that wicket,” said Morgan after the match.

First batting KKR put in 165 for 7 courtesy of Venkatesh Iyer’s second IPL fifty. The 2014 champions, who once crossed at 90 for 1 in 11.2 overs, collapsed towards the bottom of the innings. Punjab pacer Arshdeep Singh scalped three wickets, while spinner Ravi Bishnoi rejected Rahul Tripathi and Iyer.

Kolkata is fourth in the points list thanks to a handsome Net Run Rate (NRR) and are hoping to win their remaining two games to increase their chances of making the play-offs.

“I think everyone who went out found it difficult to get going at first, it wasn’t an easy wicket to start with. But after strong 13-14 overs, we didn’t take advantage of that platform. Yes, he ( Venkatesh Iyer ) is (a player). He is a real find for us, has been with us throughout the campaign and we have seen him in action.. especially his attitude is fantastic for a man who plays fearlessly as he does with the bat. He takes a lot of responsibility with the ball, Dre Russ leaves a huge gap in the all-rounder position for us but to have someone come in and contribute is really fantastic. We played great cricket in the second half and had a some positives to take away from tonight as well. Two games to go, we will fight hard and hopefully get some good results and be in the playoffs,” added Morgan.

KKR will face SRH on Sunday.
