A former student was arrested after firing a rifle through the locked door of a Texas school and shooting the principal

A former student has been arrested after shooting the principal with a gun at a school in Houston, Texas, police say.

The shooting happened around 11:45 a.m. Friday on the campus of YES Prep Southwest Secondary. Houston Police Department chief Troy Finner said the suspect, armed with a rifle, fired at a locked glass door to enter the building. ABC 13 reported.

According to police, the suspect shot the school principal, Eric Espinoza, wounding him I LOVE.

In a statement on friday, the school said Espinoza was taken to a local hospital “after a bullet hit him from behind”. He was released on Friday.

“We had an incredibly terrifying day and are extremely grateful that there were no life-threatening injuries after a 25-year-old former student shot through a window in our front door,” said Mark DiBella, CEO of YES Prep Public Schools, in the statement.

“School administrators, staff and students immediately responded to the threat by safely entering lockdown, as practiced in training exercises, and the suspect surrendered his weapon as soon as police arrived,” the statement said.

Finner said the suspect surrendered without incident. Police did not identify the suspect, but family members later confirmed that the accused gunman was 25-year-old Dexter Kelsey. KPRC-TV.

“I apologize to the school community for not knowing Dexter was in this frame of mind,” Kelsey’s mother, Doris, told KPRC-TV. “I didn’t know he had the problems he was going through and I apologize to everyone and I hope they accept my apology.”

No students were injured in the incident. The school has canceled classes Monday through Wednesday next week, according to reports.
